Comely Creatures
None of this is true if you buy your honey from a beekeeper who uses natural and sustainable methods. And given the recent epidemic of colony collapse disorder (which, incidentally, only occurs in industrial apiculture) which is wiping out the honeybee population in huge numbers it makes more sense to support your local natural beekeeper than to eschew honey completely. Ask about the keeper’s methods, find out whether they leave honey for their bees to winter on or use sugarwater (that’s a big no-no), and whether they use a smoker (which is unnecessarily traumatic for the bees when a mist of water works just as well). Honey is awesome and proper stewardship methods ensure that bees are protected and proliferate. We should encourage this.
And now I’m off to my natural beekeeping workshop.
